5 things to love about being a writer

Hemingway Lolcat

The other week, I put a stick of deodorant in our terrarium by the front door. Why? To see if my husband would notice. He did—and he barely blinked an eye. I couldn’t help but wonder if he was used to me and my eccentricities.

It’s one of the many things I like about being a writer. Not just a copywriter, a writer. Continue reading

Hello and welcome back to Writing Prompt Friday! This week has been reflective. Where am I going in life? How have I been as a human being so far? Am I living a good, kind life right now? Is this eyeshadow too sparkly?

Knowing me, my answers will change from moment to moment, but these are questions always worth trying anyway.

What I have determined to be factually true is that my eyeshadow is, indeed, not too sparkly. And that brings me joy.

On to this week’s writing prompt, which features a lovely image I captured back on a snowy day. Enjoy. Continue reading

Hello and welcome back to Writing Prompt Friday! This week I presented a long-time-in-the-making passion project here at work: our brand voice and editorial guide. I’ve been working on it for months and I won’t lie…I was nervous presenting my ‘baby’ to our vice president of marketing and chief marketing officer. I’d put months into this document. By the time I showed them my ‘first’ draft, I’d put it through 13 revisions myself.

But they loved it. It’s out for review and while I await their feedback, I get to bask in the glow of hard job well done. And that’s my win for the week.

That and getting a perfect checkup at the dentist, who gives me a rubber ducky when I’ve been flossing like a good patient.

What’s your big win for the week?

And now, on to this week’s writing prompt. Continue reading

Hello and welcome back to Writing Prompt Friday! Sometimes I wonder if the work I do makes any difference. I’ve never won an a copywriting or advertising award. Most of my efforts support other people’s efforts. So far, I have nothing to do with the fancy ads my company runs; the ones that were recently launched to a resounding round of “oooooohsss” and “aaaahhhhhhs.”

My function is one of service, not glamour. And while I like being of service, everyone needs a cookie now and then. Yup, I’ve been having a right nice little pity party.

But then someone said something that resonated. “While others are off chasing gold stars, you’re helping the business.

And that gave me a boost. Even more so since it was my boss who said it—during my performance review. (She loves me, by the way; yay!) Because what I do is fundamental work. The necessary work. I create what the business needs to grow. Internal communications, external marketing collateral, branding, standardization, ideation, creativity..bread-and-butter work keeps a business running.

Even when others are chasing glory (and I hope they do well because there’s nothing wrong with that), there are those of us who build foundations. There’s a good amount of pride in that.

So, on to this week’s writing prompt. Continue reading

Writing Prompt Friday (hungry edition)

Welcome back to Writing Prompt Friday! This week’s inspired by the fact that this week’s been so busy I haven’t been eating as much as I should to maintain my good humor or semblance of humanity. Yeah, I’ve gotten hangry a time or two. And I’ve become rather zombie-like upon occasion.

Which leads us to this week’s writing prompt… Continue reading
