Yes, for this post “awesomenesses” is a word.
Because during my latest Internet travels, I’ve discovered some awesomenesses that yearn to be shared.
And they’re worth the extra syllable, however incorrect that syllable is in just about every conceivable way.
Because they’re just that awesome.
Hence the happy cartoon. And flog-me-now abuse of the word “awesome.” May Strunk and White have mercy on my soul.
Starting with the helpful and working our way to entertaining, enjoy!
Helpful awesomeness for writers
MOAT is an ad search tool that lets you search for online ads by company. So when you’re working on a campaign for a client, you can research its previous ads and its competitors in one spot. Plus it’s a ready-made swipe file.
Journalists’ Toolbox, presented by the Society of Professional Journalists. It’s a seemingly endless collection of links and resources on a vast array of topics. Its Writing Resources page alone can make your day.
THE COPYBOT by Demian Farnworth, chief copywriter for Copyblogger Media. Fantastic headlines. Succinct copy. And he shares how you can do it, too. A good place to start? His Must Read page.
Creative awesomeness for writers
The Bloggess by Jenny Lawson, author of Let’s Pretend This Never Happened. Not a “how-to-write” blog, but a top-notch example of how to write with your Voice. How to be genuine. And how to make people laugh so hard they cry a little.
Zen Pencils by Gavin Aung, freelance cartoonist. Gavin creates cartoons based on inspirational quotes. Well-drawn and poignant. Check out his 10 most popular Zen Pencils comics of 2013. There’s something for everyone.
Design Taxi. With articles on creative lifestyle, packing design, graphic design, photography, advertising, humor and so much more, this site helps you keep your creative juices flowing. Because writers need to revel in more than words.
The SEO content writers’ manifesto by Heather Lloyd-Martin of SuccessWorks. Full disclosure: I haven’t dug into this website yet. And I don’t — in any way — endorse its classes because I know nothing about them. It’s the manifesto that strikes a chord.
Fantastic time sucks for all
What would Internet travel be without stepping in distraction once in a while?
Boring. It would be boring.
So, here are a couple of awesomenesses that help liven up the Internet (and daily life).
This Advertising Life is a collection of gifs that “explore the emotions of life in advertising.” Whether you’re a corporate copywriter, agency copywriter or a freelance writer, you can relate to more than a handful. My favorite: when I’m given a brief with incomplete information. Seriously, check out the otter’s expression.
McSweeny’s is a publishing company that operates an award-winning humor website. Its collection of articles is vast. Each is well-written. Some are unsafe for work. One of its best? The Ultimate Guide to Writing Better than You Normally Do.
And over to you…come across an awesomeness resource/chuckle/doohickey for writers lately? If so, feel free to share in the comments.
